GATUKUYU - OUR MISSION FIELD
Our current mission field is Gatukuyu where we serve alongside our parents, veteran missionaries, Rick and Sue Simonsen.
How to pronounce it like an English speaker? Gah-two-koo-you
How to pronounce it like a true native speaker? Gah-tow-ko-yoh
Where is Gatukuyu? If you love numbers, Gatukuyu is 0°58'60.0"S in latitude and 36°58'00.0"E in longitude, 0.98°S 36.97°E. If you appreciate simplicity like we do, Gatukuyu is a small town in Central Kenya, Kiambu County. While traveling by air may be faster and less bumpy, the trip to Gatukuyu from Nairobi will cover 35 kilometers (22 miles) on road.
What are the people like? With several thousand people in the area, most people speak Kikuyu and Swahili and a few comprehend the English language. For this reason, we carry out our church services in Swahili.
What is the spiritual atmosphere in Gatukuyu? God has uniquely placed us in an area where majority of the people believe that the way to heaven is through the works that they have done and will continue to do. Many know of Jesus but do not have a personal relationship with Him and have not placed their entire dependence on Him alone for salvation. We believe that the Lord is not willing that these dear souls would perish but that they would come to repentance.
Gatukuyu is an open mission field ready to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
